Cambridge Center Plaza
Since its completion, the new Cambridge Center Plaza has transformed a windswept vacant space and has infused Technology Square with newfound vitality. CCP includes the entrances to Greater Boston’s busiest Marriott Hotel and the MIT/Kendall Square MBTA Station, and every day the plaza is teeming with local Cantabrigians, out of town visitors, the MIT community and the tech workers from many nearby cutting edge companies.
The plaza is largely built over structure and the design deliberately acts as a contemporary stage set encouraging life to unfold within it. It has generous south facing orientation, and a large sculptural sloped lawn in the center, shaded by Honeylocust trees, provides informal urban picnicking and doubles as a well-used amphitheater during the popular summer concert series.
New restaurants encircle the plaza with outdoor dining, which ensures vibrant day and night time activity. All plaza elements including the pavement, furnishings, lighting, and the interpretive Entrepreneurs Walk of Fame are patterned to engage with the divergent architectural forms surrounding the site, effectively connecting the plaza with the city beyond its edges.
