Presidio Garden
This private garden residence overlooks San Francisco’s historic Presidio National Park and has commanding views of Baker Beach and the Pacific Ocean beyond. The 1/8 acre property derives its energy from engaging the borrowed landscape of the Presidio. The pure forms of the garden geometry are aligned to engage the major view of the Presidio, creating the sense of a much larger space.
The most significant feature of the Presidio Garden is the “Prow,” which is a cantilevered deck that overlooks the Presidio. Because of the regulations governing development along the Presidio, a major property line setback is in place that prohibits disturbance to the lands immediately adjacent to the Presidio. The cantilevered design of the Prow respects this restriction while allowing the Owners to fully maximize the use of their garden space. In order to provide shelter from the high winds that typify this area, a glass wind panel encloses the prow without compromising the views. Shadley Associates collaborated with local architects, Kuth-Ranieri, to develop the details of the Prow.
Other features of this project include a family sized outdoor spa surrounded by a wood deck, a firepit, stone terraces, a seatwall, a second floor wood deck, rooftop gardens and an ornamental and vegetable garden.
