Nelson Place Elementary School
Shadley Associates worked with Lamoureux Pagano Associates and the City of Worcester on a new elementary school to replace the existing Nelson Place School. The new school site includes parking areas, bus loop around the school, two playgrounds, a flexible use playfield, and basketball court. Native tree and shrub planting, conservation meadow areas, and bio-retention basins are intended to blend with the surrounding woodland as well as provide naturalistic buffers between the new school and adjacent residential neighborhoods. The playgrounds offer activities for different age groups, engage the steep topography of the site while accommodating ADA requirements, and include both traditional and natural play features. The new school opened in the fall of 2017. This $58 million project, funded by the MSBA, has been awarded LEED-S v4 Silver certification.
