Rivergreen Riverwalk
Shadley Associates worked with Bohler Engineering on a new Riverwalk at Rivergreen Park in Everett, MA. The new Riverwalk circles the edge of the new mixed-use development site along the Malden River and connects with the Northern Strand Bikeway. The development includes a new municipal park plus development sites that are becoming occupied. A city will soon begin construction on a new Malden River Boathouse on the Riverwalk, which would provide space for the high school rowing team plus other rowing clubs. The city is also working on a kayak and canoe launch, new crew dock, walking paths and a living shoreline that is slowly becoming populated with native species.
Shadley Associates designed a Riverwalk that takes advantages of the curves of the shoreline, connects with upland destinations, and includes a large shade shelter for seating and events, lighting, signage, and restoration planting. Because the site housed a large GE factory that made jet airplane engines for World War II in the 1940’s, the site was contaminated with risks for human use. The project work capped these soils, provided a horizontal marker, plus vertical concrete bollards that denote the edge of the cap, and met with DEP approval. Construction was completed in 2019 on this active and passive recreation amenity on the Malden River in Everett.
