Riverbend on the Charles
Shadley Associates worked with Criterion Development and Cube 3 Architects on this 174-unit luxury apartment development located on an abandoned postindustrial site along the banks of the Charles River. Building One is entirely residential and features a large elevated courtyard with expansive views to the riverfront in addition to a swimming pool, garden spaces, and ornamental planting around the building. Building Two, although primarily residential, features a small retail area and public outdoor cafe. Both sites connect directly with the Charles River walkway and bicycle path via new pedestrian street crossings and multiple access points. At the project entry there is a motor court and a small pocket park which leads to the Department of Recreation and Conservation’s (DCR) Charles River Reservation path – a feature designed for the shared benefit of the public and the residents of the new development. Improvements on the river path along the entire length of the residential development will include the establishment of scenic vistas to the river and removal and ongoing management of invasive species.
