The Val / Broadstone Middlesex

Shadley Associates provided landscape architectural services for The Val / Broadstone Middlesex mixed-use redevelopment project in Billerica with Alliance Residential Company.  Broadstone Middlesex is a 211-unit mixed use development with an additional 2,750 SF of commercial space within a single 4-story building, with architecture by Cube 3.  The 4.18± acre former commercial site is located on the bustling Middlesex Turnpike for convenient access, and has a scenic pond situated to the rear of the property.  The open space design includes a loop walk with interpretive signage, edged by a farmer’s wall and further defined by a combination of existing and proposed native plantings. 

The large roof deck amenity courtyard space built on a podium with parking below presented an opportunity to create a wide variety of program elements within the mostly enclosed space using landscape elements and plantings to provide separation.  The north end of the courtyard features active social elements including a pool with sundeck, grilling stations, various dining areas and custom fire feature, while the south end contains intimate seating areas and significant ornamental plantings.  Broadstone Middlesex was completed in 2023.
